Edge of Appalachia Preserve

A private preserve of 14,000 acres of forest, prairies, waterfalls, gorges, and mountains, containing over 100 rare species of plants and animals. Administered jointly by the Nature Conservancy and Cincinnati Museum Center, the preserve contains and protects such local landmarks as Buzzardroost, Cedar Falls, Red Rock, The Swirl Hole, and Lynx Prairie.

The Wheat Ridge Amish Community: The Amish community in Adams County has grown from its humble roots in 1976 to a community of over 96 households. Visitors will find a variety of shops, bakeries, furniture stores, goods and services. Amish buggy’s and horses, children on scooters, babies being pulled in wagons, and clothes drying in the fresh air, are some of the sights visitors will observe while on Wheat Ridge.

 State Nature Preserves: Because of Adams County’s unique geography and plant communities the Ohio Division of Natural Areas & Preserves has designated six state nature preserves within the county; each distinctively different. Most have trails with interruptive signs pointing out the unique plant life and features that make each preserve special.

Adams Lake

The only state park in Adams County. Adams Lake is 47 acres and can boast early spring trout fishing, and better then average bass fishing. The park has a playground, restrooms, a 3/4 mile blacktop walking path, boat ramp, picnic areas, and a large shelter house. A popular spot for local outdoor activities.

Shawnee State Forest

Shawnee State Forest is Ohio’s largest state forest at over 63,000 acres. It can lay claim to having the states only designated Wilderness Area. Shawnee is some of the most mountainous, forested, and remote country in Ohio. Also known as the little Smokies, spring wildflowers and fall foliage draw visitors from all over the state.

Original Quilt Barn Trail

Adams County started the original quilt barn trail in 2001 with 20 quilt squares that formed a “Clothesline of Quilts” driving tour throughout the county. The idea has caught on as presently there are now over 40 quilt squares on barns throughout Adams County and the original idea, that started right here, has spread across the U.S.

Serpent Mound

As one of the greatest Native American earthworks, Serpent Mound is known around the world. Designed within the mound are summer and winter solstice alignments. Many mysteries and unanswered questions remain about the mound’s origin and builders.

The Ohio River Scenic Byway

The stretch of U.S. 52 through southern Adams County along the Ohio River is among the most scenic roads in Ohio. This rural highway winds past mountains and small communities with little or no industry along its way. No wonder it was designated a State Scenic Byway.

Ohio Brush Creek

Simply one of the most beautiful and scenic streams in southern Ohio, Brush Creek is a shining example of a high quality stream. Inviting to float as it is to fish. There are six public access points along the stream. Floating or fishing, Ohio Brush Creek is a great way to spend a summer day.

Harshaville & Kirker Covered Bridges

Of Adams County covered bridges, only two remain. Harshaville is still in use and is located on Graces Run Road, at Harshaville.  Kirker Covered Bridge, no longer in use, is located on St. Rt. 136.

House of Phacops

A small private rock shop and museum displaying fossils and Trilobite’s, and specializing in local geology, archeology, and ancient history. Located close to Serpent Mound on St. Rt. 41 at Locust Grove.

Blake's Pharmacy
An old style 60’s drugstore with a soda fountain that is still serving five cent cokes; just like they did in 1961, serving milkshakes and sandwiches too. Located in downtown West Union.

Lafferty Memorial Funeral & Carriage Collection
An interesting collection of antique horse drawn and motorized hearses and other funeral memorabilia dating back to the mid-1800’s. Located at Lafferty Funeral Home (est. in 1848), in West Union.

Vastine Run
A hike into Vastine Run will reveal old sandstone quarries where building stone, used in Cincinnati construction projects during the 1800’s, was quarried from sandstone ledges high in the mountains. Located in the Shawnee Wilderness Area.
