While Margaret Carpenter's official role at TJ is as the Library Media Specialist, she wears many hats to support the talented students in their Future Problem Solving endeavors.
While working at Hong Kong International School ten years ago, Margaret and her husband took the coaches’ training from an Australian coach involved in spreading the FPS program in Southeast Asia. What most impressed her about FPS was that,
“[FPS] emphasizes that in the midst of problems and issues, we can creatively and collaboratively THINK BIG about solutions to make the world a better place . . . to think outside the box, think win-win, . . . research with skill, take positive risks and not forget to laugh along the way.”
She became involved with the program at Thomas Jefferson in 2011 when approached by a student who was passionately trying to keep the FPS club going but needed a sponsor. She jumped onboard to support these student leaders and to keep the program going at the school. Not only that, she and her FPSers have mentored George C. Marshall High School to start a program this year, and they even look to involve Kilmer Middle School next year.
For her enthusiasm and commitment to the Future Problem Solving Program in Fairfax County, the Executive Board of Future Problem Solving of Virginia is proud to present the 2013 Mover and Shaker Award to Margaret Carpenter.
